Mayor's staff, AJC delegation discuss UN Holocaust Victim Observance
Members of Houston Mayor Bill White's staff and a Chapter delegation met this week to discuss the Tuesday, Jan. 27 UN Holocaust Victim Observance.  The Chapter initiated the local observance last year.  AJC participants included Iris Mushin, Dena Palermo, Tracy Stein and Helene Zadok.  Mushin and Zadok are co-chairing the observance.
 
Praising Bush on Support for Georgia
AJC, in a letter to President Bush, expressed concern for the crisis in Georgia and lauded the president for his strong statements of support. AJC welcomed shipments of American humanitarian aid to Georgia, noting that "Georgia is a stalwart ally of the United States, and has been there for us, in Iraq and elsewhere, when we needed its assistance."Read letter
 
Azerbaijan visit
An AJC delegation concluded a three-day visit to Azerbaijan, the secular Shiite-majority country bordering Iran and Russia. The group, led by David Harris, met with President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister Artur Rasizade, and other top officials. They also conferred with the U.S. and Israeli ambassadors, as well as Azerbaijan's Muslim and Jewish leaders. Read news release Azerbaijan is a key economic and security partner of the U.S. and Israel.

AJC is actively engaged in the domestic and international scene as an advocacy organization.
 
David Harris was a keynote speaker at the 2008 European Union of Jewish Students (EUJS) Summer University in Turkey. Nearly 500 young European Jews, including ten students from Central and Eastern Europe sponsored by AJC, engaged in sessions on leadership development, activism and Jewish identity. EUJS is one of AJC's 28 international partners. 
 
Board Profile
Bobby Lapin, a former Chapter president and currently a member of AJC's national board of governors, is a trial lawyer. He is active in a leadership role in a number of Jewish organizations including the JCC (Past President), Jewish Federation, Congregation Beth Israel and Emery/Weiner, where he is currently its president.
