Institute of Human Relations Award Chairs
The Chapter will honor Paul Murphy, CEO of Amegy Bank, and Amegy Bank with its Institute of Human Relations Award at a luncheon gala on Wed., Nov. 5 at the Omni Houston Hotel.  Co-chairs of the gala are Barry Lewis, Michael Morgen, Michael Plank, and Steve Stephens.
 
International Affairs
Chapter members participate in diplomatic training
Dena Palermo and Jim Busis, director of AJC's Asia and Pacific Rim Institute led a diplomatic training session this week.  Participants included: Susan Altschuler, David Barish, Reva Edison, Jack Lascar, Syma Levy, Boris Lioznyansky, Melanie Lowther, Ann Kasman, Rhona Konig, Tracy Stein and Helene Zadok.
 
Conversations with French Consul General
A Chapter delegation visited with Pierre Grandjouan, Consul General of France and Veronique Lhemann, press officer to discuss the EU, Iran, Russia and the Middle East.  The Consul General will brief the Chapter in early December on French perspectives on the EU and current affairs.  Participating in the delegation were Jack Lascar, Dena Palermo, Tracy Stein and Randy Czarlinsky.
 
Democratic National Convention
   AJC events at the DNC in Denver drew party leaders and members, as well as local Jewish activists. Rep. Gary Ackerman (NY) and distinguished Indian-American and Indian leaders spoke at a roundtable discussion on Indian-Jewish affairs. A program on the energy crisis with Reps. Rush Holt (NJ) and Ed Perlmutter (CO) included two top energy advisors from the Obama campaign. AJC also co-hosted with the NAACP a seminar on Black-Jewish relations, featuring Rep. Eleanor Homes Norton (DC), and held a reception for Ambassadors from a number of countries attending the convention.

AJC/Brandeis Seminar in the Berkshires 
    AJC leaders had a unique opportunity to explore the impact of global society on Jewish concerns with top academics and AJC experts at the annual AJC/Brandeis in the Berkshires seminar. Houstonians Don and Joanne Brodsky participated in the seminar.  The educational conference, held at in Lenox, MA, was led by Antony Polonsky, professor of East European Jewry at Brandeis University. Other faculty included Emanuele Ottolenghi, director of AJC's Transatlantic Institute; Dina Siegal Vann, director of AJC's Latino and Latin American Institute; Jim Busis, AJC's director of the Asia and Pacific Institute, and Steven Bayme, AJC's director of Contemporary Jewish Life.


Behind the Scenes
 
AJC is actively engaged in the domestic and international scene as an advocacy organization.
 
New board members Rhona Konig, Syma Levy, Melissa Fertel, Melanie Lowther, and Iris Mushin participated in a board orientation session this week.
 
Helene Zadok, Iris Mushin, Jack Lascar, and Dena Palermo met this week to plan the January 27, 2009 UN Holocaust Victim Observance for the Consular Corps that will feature Mayor Bill White and Fred Zeidman, chair, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council. 
 
Houston Mayor Bill White spoke on August 28at the bi-monthly meeting of the Mayor's Advisory Committee on Immigrant & Refugee Affairs (MACIRA) attended by Barbara Shepard.
 
Board Profile
Mike Levy is a partner with McNeil, Levy & Friedman with a professional background in financial planning and investment management.  A graduate of UT, he is a member of AJC's ACCESS Steering Committee and interested in Domestic/Jewish Affairs and Intergroup/Interreligious affairs.  He is co-chair of the BJE's Gift of Israel Committee, a board member of the Jewish Federation and a member of the Houston Jewish Community Foundation's investment committee. Mike's interests are his family, reading, tennis and travel.
