Mideast Briefing: Anti-Semitic Politics Post- 9/11

"As we fight new manifestations of anti-Semitism, and as we define our place in world affairs, we must walk away, and help others do the same, from this elegant but misguided notion that 'Islam' and 'the West' are on the warpath," writes Eran Lerman, director of AJC's Israel/Middle East office.Read briefing

Mexican-American emerging leaders seminar
Thirty-three young Mexican-American leaders from the Greater Houston area will gather this weekend for AJC's emerging leaders workshop that promotes tactics and techniques in advocacy. The participants are from businesses, community and religious organizations from Beaumont to the Woodlands to Clear Lake.  The seminar is underwritten by grants from Amegy Bank, the Feldman Foundation, AJC and the Consulate General of Mexico.

Tribute committee recruitment begins for Institute of Human Relations Award
Co-chairs of AJC's gala luncheon honoring Paul Murphy and Amegy Bank met this week to discuss outreach to prospective tribute members. Barry Lewis, Michael Morgan, Michael Plank, and Steve Stephens are reaching this next week.

AJC, Presidential Candidates at ServiceNation Summit
Senators John McCain and Barack Obama will join AJC leaders, and others, at the ServiceNation national summit on September 11. ServiceNation brings together citizens, leaders and more than 100 organizations to advocate for a voluntary citizen service plan. AJC has been a long-time champion of voluntary citizen service. The AJC plan is in Imagining America: Making National Service a National Priority, the report of AJC's National Service Task Force.

AJC at the RNC
AJC events at the Republican National Convention drew top party leaders and members, as well as local Jewish activists. McCain campaign energy advisors and other experts, including AJC Legislative Director Richard Foltin, addressed a policy breakfast on the quest for energy independence. Indian Ambassador Ronen Sen joined AJC Government and International Affairs Director Jason Isaacson and Indian American community leaders in a discussion on the common advocacy objectives of the Jewish and Indian communities. Other AJC events include a diplomatic reception, a Latino-Jewish dialogue moderated by AJC General Counsel Jeffrey Sinensky, and a briefing on the U.S. role in advancing Middle East peace and security.

Indyk to address consular corps luncheon
The Chapter's annual Consular Corps luncheon will feature Ambassador Martin Indyk on Wed., Feb. 4 at 11:30 am.  Indyk, was Ambassador to Israel and assistant secretary of state for near east affairs during the Clinton Administration, directs the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at Brookings Institution.  His new book, Innocent Abroad: An Intimate History of American Peace Diplomacy in the Middle East, will be released in early 2009.
Behind the Scenes

AJC is actively engaged in the domestic and international scene as an advocacy organization.

AJC's internet video "What's Israel Really Like" was part of the Israel 60 presentation at Minute Maid Park on Sunday.

Board Profile
Nat Levy chairs the Chapter's intergroup/interreligious affairs commission and is interested in international affairs, too.  He practiced law in South Africa until 1979 when he moved to Houston.  While in South Africa he served on the South African Jewish Board of Deputies.  Locally, he serves on the Federation board, the CRC and the Community Foundation.  A financial advisor, Nat and his wife Jill have three children and seven grandchildren.

We wish his wife Jill a speedy and healthy recovery from her recent surgery.

Best regards,

Randy Czarlinsky
