Meetings, overwhelmingly private, with 70 countries and other officials included so far the presidents of the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Senegal and Ukraine; the prime minister of India; and the foreign ministers of Albania, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Estonia, Ghana, Kuwait, Macedonia, Morocco, Nigeria, Portugal, Romania, Rwanda, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Tunisia and Uganda. The EU Special Representative to the Middle East also visited AJC for an extensive conversation.

Protesting Iranian President Ahmadinejad at UN

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, AJC protested the scheduled address by the UN General Assembly President, Miguel D'Escoto Brockmann, at a dinner honoring the Iranian leader. The GA president "has put the credibility of the United Nations into question," wrote AJC. Read Letter.  AJC called on UN member states to condemn Ahmadinejad's speech, rife with anti-Semitic stereotypes, to the GA. Read news release.

AJC honors Latino leader
AJC's Latino and Latin American Institute presented its Gesher Award to Raul Yzaguirre, who headed the National Council of La Raza for 30 years, in recognition of his leadership and commitment to strengthening relations between Hispanics and Jews in the U.S. Many leaders from the Jewish and Latino communities, including a number of Project Interchange alumni, attended the event at the Israeli Embassy, the annual Latino-Jewish reception in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Tom Kahn, the new chair of the Latino and Latin American Institute, presented the award.
Behind the Scenes

AJC is actively engaged in the domestic and international scene as an advocacy organization.

David Barish, chair of the Chapter's governance committee, which is responsible for recruiting new board members and nominating officers, is putting together a committee that plans to meet six times by the end of February.

The Chapter's Energy Task Force is finalizing speakers for the January 12 energy forum.  AJC is also presenting a national Energy Summit on October 24 and 25 in Chicago.  Energy Task Force co-chair Max Blankfeld and Barbara Shepard plan to attend.

The Chapter continues to work with Houston based Americans for Immigration Reform (AIR), a recently created non-profit by the Greater Houston Partnership.  AJC's Legislative Director Richard Foltin, in Washington, is working with AIR to have the organization present to immigration coalition partners in Washington.

Board Profile
Kenny Friedman is a past president of the Chapter and a recipient of the Chapter's Max H. Nathan Award.  A Houston attorney, he is Chair of the Harris County Sports Authority and an avid baseball fan, including the Tampa Bay Rays, where his son Andrew is the general manager.

On Monday evening, the Jewish community observes Rosh Hashana, the Jewish new year.  The office will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday for the holiday observance.  Best wishes for a healthy, happy and sweet new year.

Best regards,

Randy Czarlinsky
