Counterterrorism Watch: The New Locus of Radical Islam
Pakistan's northernmost province, the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), is a global center of Taliban activity, threatening Pakistan, the South Asian region, and U.S. interests. Latino Emerging Leaders debriefing
AJC leaders engaged in the planning of the recent Mexican-American emerging leaders seminar met this week with Mexican Consul General Carlos Gonzales Magallon and Consul Julian Escutia at the Consulate to review the weekend.  Participating in the discussion were Mark Friedman, Mina Sklar, Barbara Shepard, Tracy Stein and Randy Czarlinsky.  Outreach to the seminar participants, who expressed interest in creating two tracks, development and leadership skills, will take place.

Upcoming Developments in Church-State Law
The Chapter's Thursday, Oct. 16 board meeting will host David Dow, a University Distinguished Professor at the University of Houston Law Center.  Dow will David Dowprovide an overview of expected impending developments in First Amendment free exercise and establishment clause law.   The luncheon meeting will be devoted to expected impending developments in First Amendment free exercise and establishment clause law.   
A special focus on cases to be decided by the Supreme Court in the 2008-09 term, ways in which this area of the law might be affected by the outcome of the 2008 presidential election, and potential legislation in the field that may be considered by the next Congress will be assessed by Dow.
David Dow teaches, has been published in, and is a recognized authority in the field of constitutional law.  Dow who graduated from Yale Law School, has handled more than fifty appeals, including more than 25 death penalty appeals. His areas of expertise also include contracts and death penalty law. He has written extensively on these subjects as well as on equal protection, law and literature, and federal jurisdiction.
 
Martin Siegel, chair of the chapter's domestic affairs commission, is working on having Continuing Legal Education credits available for attorneys attending the board lecture.

French Consulate briefing on EU
The Chapter will host French Consul General Pierre Grandjouan on Thursday, Dec. 11 for an international affairs commission luncheon discussion on France's leadership role in the European Union.  France serves as president of the EU through December 2008.
 
Japanese American Group Honors AJC
AJC was honored at the Japanese American Citizens League's dinner commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Civil Liberties Act (1988), which granted reparations and a presidential apology to Japanese Americans forcefully interned during Word War II. AJC took the leadership role among civil rights organizations in seeking redress. Ann Schaffer, director of AJC's Belfer Center for American Pluralism, accepted the award on behalf of AJC.
 
Houston's AIR director meets with AJC nat'l staff
Beto Cardenas, director of Americans for Immigration Reform, a new non profit organization created by the Greater Houston PArtnership to advocate for immigration reform across the country, met with AJC national staff to discuss both organizations' efforts on immigration reform.
 
House Resolution on
Durban Review Conference
AJC saluted the U.S. House of Representatives' unanimous passage of a resolution calling for high-level U.S. diplomatic leadership aimed at defeating the campaign to divert the UN's Durban Review Conference into attacking Israel and promoting anti-Semitic hate. AJC had sent a letter of support to Rep. Howard Berman, chair of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, who originally introduced the resolution. The review conference is slated for April 2009 in Geneva. Read news release.

Board profile
Marc Sharpe is active in AJC's finance and international affairs areas.  A participant in diplomatic and congressional briefings, Marc is the father of three children and also serves on the board of Holocaust Museum Houston and the Houston Jewish Community Foundation investment committee.  A Fulbright and Harvard Scholar, Marc attended Harvard Business School and Cambridge and Oxford Universities.
