Houston's America's Table Thanksgiving
Nearly 200 faith, ethnic, diplomatic and political leaders participated in AJC's America's Table program this morning at the Marriott Westchase. Seventy students from Parker Elementary advanced choir began the morning singing This Land is Your Land. Personal immigration stories from Vietnam, Europe and South Afrtica were shared and Congressmen Al Green and John Culberson provided remarks on the historic times with which we live. AJC and Congressman Green initiated the project three years ago. His foresight and financial support have enhanced the project since its local inception. AJC board members Sandy Block, Ignacio Donoso, Reva Edison, Joyce Gilbert, Renee Karpas, Nat Levy, Julia Mazow, Carol Nelkin, Richard Shaw, and Tracy Stein attended.

AJC testifies before TX State Bd of Ed on creationism
 Chapter president Tracy Stein provided written testimony to the Texas State Board of Education this week urging no modifications of evolution teaching in elementary, middle and high school science. The Board votes in January whether to make modifications in the science curriculum.
Bahrain Foreign Minister Meets AJC in Washington
An AJC delegation, led by Director of Government and International Affairs Jason Isaacson, met with Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, and Ambassador Houda Noono, Bahrain's ambassador to the U.S. The foreign minister expressed his ongoing support for the advancement of Middle East peace and security and strengthened U.S.-Bahraini relations. AJC commended the foreign minister for Bahrain's progressive foreign policy agenda and its tradition of pluralism. Ambassador Noono is a member of Bahrain's Jewish community.
Project Interchange Brings Construction Executives to Israel
Nine leading women in the American construction and real estate industries visited Israel on a Project Interchange (PI) educational seminar. A joint business venture between Israeli academia, the Beersheba Municipality, and KUD international, a major real-estate developer in Los Angeles, resulted after a similar PI-sponsored trip three years ago.
AJC Renews Call to Pass Colombia Trade Pact
"We need to stand with our allies, and Colombia has proven to be a stalwart democratic ally of the United States," said AJC, urging Congressional leadership, during the current lame duck session, to swiftly approve the U.S.-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement (TPA). "Congressional approval of the TPA will honor America's commitment to its trusted friend, and will promote economic growth and stability in these challenging times." READ NEWS RELEASE. Colombian President Alvaro Uribe addressed AJC's 2007 annual dinner in Washington. AJC actively promotes stronger hemispheric relations, chiefly through its Latino and Latin American Institute.
AJC Praises Germany for Banning TV Station Promoting Incitement and Hatred
"Al-Manar, and other spewers of raw, unadulterated racism, including anti-Semitism, have no place in a Europe that values pluralism and peace," said David Harris. Read news release.
ACCESS in Germany for Kristallnacht
In coordination with the Germany Close-Up Foundation, an AJC ACCESS delegation of 20 young professionals traveled to Berlin to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht. During the ten-day visit, the ACCESS group met with German government officials and representatives of the German Jewish community for discussions of contemporary German politics and culture.

Behind the Scenes
AJC is actively engaged in the domestic and international scene as an advocacy organization.
Jack Lascar, Iris Mushin, Dena Palermo, and Helene Zadok finalized the Chapter's program for the UN Holocaust Victim Remembrance observance for Houston's Consular Corps on Jan. 27 that will feature Mayor Bill White and US Holocaust Memorial Council chair Fred Zeidman.
The Chapter's Energy Task Force is finalizing details for the Jan. 12 Energy Forum.
The International Affairs Commission, led by Jack Lascar, Ellen Grabois, Scottie Kant and Susan Altschuler, are putting the final touches on the Consular Corps Chanukah Party. More than 20 diplomats have already stated their intent to attend.
