Children, immigrant stories highlight Houston's America's Table
Immigrant stories of coming to America highlighted the Chapter's third annual America's Table celebration. The personal stories featured Trish Nguyen, below right, Chaja Verveer, below, and Nat Levy, bottom right, who shared their journeys from Vietnam, Holland and South Africa to America respectively. The students from the Parker Elementary School Advanced Choir, above, began the program with folk songs and "This Land is Your Land". Congressmen Al Green and John Culberson shared historical insights and how America today is filled with opportunities for everyone. Congressman Green and AJC initiated America's Table in Houston in the Fall 2006. Pictured below are: Tracy Stein, Chapter president, Reps. John Culberson and Al Green, Carol Nelkin, a member of AJC's Board of Governors, and Randy Czarlinsky, AJC's Houston director.
International Affairs
Beginning next month, the Chapter will engage with the entire Houston Consular Corps for three separate events. Next week, 28 diplomats will participate in the Chapter Board's annual Consular Corps Chanukah party. Susan Altschuler, Ellen Grabois and Scottie Kant are finalizing the event. In January, diplomats and the City's International Affairs Committee members will be invited to participate in an AJC/City of Houston UN Holocaust Victim Remembrace Observance at the Historical Society that will feature choirs from St. John's and Emery/Weiner. Iris Mushin and Jack Lascar visited the site this week. Finally, the Chapter's Consular Corps luncheon will be held on Feb. 4 and feature Ambassador Martin Indyk.
The Chapter will also host a luncheon discussion with the Consuls General of France, Germany and the United Kingdom on Monday, Dec. 8 as they assess the EU's and their own government's response to Iran, Islamic radicalism and working with the Obama administration.
Crucial Issues Series begins
The Chapter's Crucial Issues Series, which is being presented in colloboration with the World Affairs Council Houston, begins on the anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, Dec. 10. Hillel Neuer, director of UN Watch in Geneva, will discuss the UN Human Rights Council and how the UN is faring. The forum takes place at 6 pm at the Omni Houston Hotel. Reva Edison, Ellen Grabois and Sandy Block helped design the series.

Behind the Scenes
AJC is actively engaged in the domestic and international scene as an advocacy organization.
Tomorrow, we will pause for the great American tradition of Thanksgiving. Despite the difficulties and hardships members of the community are facing, as well as the enormous and immediate challenges our country faces, we know Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on our many blessings, to relax, and to enjoy family and friends.
In Houston, we are a City that is very diverse. Last week, we looked around the room at America's Table and that diversity was reflected. Whether it was our friends from our recent Mexican-American emerging leaders seminar, the growing Asian community, or African-American community -- ethnic, faith, political and diplomatic members of our community came together. This is how Houston is different. While we are diverse, we are also united as a community. That is also part of AJC, as an organization that opens doors and builds relationships and bridges to the many facets of our community.
Best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving,
