Houston board to discuss demographic changes, trends and energy
AJC's Houston board will discuss the dramatic demographic and ethnic change that is expected to take place across America with Dr. Steve Murdock at its Sept. 17 board meeting.  Murdock, the former head of the US Census and professor of sociology at Rice University, will discuss the trends.  On October 16, Gal Luft and Anne Korin, two Washington energy analysts and authors of TURN OIL INTO SALT, will discuss energy related issues with board members

AJC is actively engaged in the domestic and international scene as a GLOBAL JEWISH ADVOCACY organization.
 
Co-chairs and chair of the AJC Max Nathan Award dinner honoring Joe Williams on Dec. 10 met this week.  Mark Brookner, Joe Kaplan, Bobby Lapin and Fred Zeidman joined dinner chair Irving Pozmantier, AJC president Tracy Stein and me.
 
Dena Palermo, vp international affairs, and Iris Mushin, International Affairs chair, finalized the diplomatic training scenarios and briefings for this Sunday's seminar.
 
Ann Schaffer, director of AJC's Belfer Center for American Pluralism, will join other presenters at AJC Houston's second workshop for Mexican-American Emerging Leaders.  Funded by AJC, Amegy Bank, the Feldman Foundation and the Mexican Consulate the workshop features discussions on advocacy and community organization.  Welcoming the 28 participants are Mexican Consul General Carlos Magallon and AJC Houston president Tracy Stein.  Presenters include: Annica Gorham, Director, Houston Interfaith Worker Justice Center; Hilda Davila, Deputy Director General, Institute for Mexicans Abroad; Eliseo Medine, International Executive Vice President, SEIU; Randy Czarlinsky, AJC Houston; Beto Cardenas, Executive Counsel to American's for Immigration Reform; Stephen Klineberg, professor of sociology at Rice University; Hans Mayer, consultant for community organization and fund raising; Pio Del Castillo, Public Relations Account Supervisor, Lopez Negrete Communications; Richard Shaw, AJC Board member;  and Julian Escutia, Consul of Mexico.  Barb Shepard, Jack Lascar, Nat Levy, Mina Sklar and Mark Friedman helped put together the workshop.
 
Congrats to David Goldstein, who joins the ADL staff as director of development in Houston.  Deborah Kaplan, Tracy Stein and staff met this week to review the Houston AJC development calendar.  Mazel Tov to the Karpas-Schechter families on this weekend's simcha and to Syma and Darryl Levy on their upcoming simcha.
