Shalit's Continued Captivity Is Heartbreaking
AJC focused again on the anguish of Israeli solider Gilad Shalit's captivity after his family made public a video of him recorded by his Hamas captors. The video was the first time that Shalit has been seen since the Israeli soldier was kidnapped in June 2006. "We shared the emotional response of the Israeli people in seeing the video of Gilad," said AJC Executive Director David Harris. "Relief in the knowledge that he is alive, deep concern at seeing the agonies of more than three years of captivity etched in his face, anger that he is still being held hostage by the terrorists who rule Gaza."
Negotiations Must Lead to Full Transparency on Iran Nuclear Program
"Nothing less than Iranian full disclosure and complete transparency" is key to averting a major crisis over Iran's nuclear program, said AJC, following talks in Geneva between international negotiators and Iranian representatives. "A vital aspect of engaging with Iran is ensuring its leaders understand that all options, including a punishing sanctions regime, remain open - and will be imposed if Tehran continues with its deceit." Honoring Congressman Engel for Latino-Jewish Relations
AJC's Latino and Latin American Institute and the Embassy of Israel co-hosted their fourth annual reception in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month to celebrate the many accomplishments of the Latino community in the U.S. The 2009 Gesher Award, which recognizes the efforts of an exceptional individual to build bridges among Hispanics, Jews and the Americas, was presented to Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY). Hundreds of people attended the event, including members of Congress, Latin American diplomats and prominent Latino leaders.
AJC: Time to Draw a Line Under Goldstone Report
AJC praised U.S. efforts in securing Palestinian cooperation to delay a vote in the UN Human Rights Council on the Goldstone Commission report on the Gaza conflict, but expressed concern at a Palestinian diplomat's remarks that the report "remains alive." "We welcome the withdrawal of yet another effort to bash Israel in Geneva, and applaud the U.S. Administration for achieving this result," said AJC. "This is a hopeful and welcome signal that the U.S., now that it has joined the Human Rights Council, is going to be active in confronting the routine demonization of Israel which takes place there."
Executive Director's Blog: American Jews at the Center of Things
"If your only sources of information on American Jews were surveys sponsored by right-wing or left-wing groups, you'd easily believe that the vast majority of America's six million Jews fully share their respective views on the Middle East." David Harris writes about AJC's 2009 Annual Survey of American Jewish Opinion on his Jerusalem Post blog. READ
New York Times Jerusalem Correspondent Briefs AJC Leaders
Ethan Bronner, Jerusalem bureau chief for the New York Times, spoke to more than 50 AJC senior leaders and supporters over a private breakfast at AJC headquarters. Bronner presented a sobering view of Israel's difficult options regarding Iran's nuclear program and the prospects for advancing Israeli-Palestinian peace, and also shared his own experiences of living in Israel as a foreign correspondent. Bronner previously was the Jerusalem correspondent for the Boston Globe and Reuters. He has met in Jerusalem with AJC missions.
Racial Motifs in Memphis Congressional Race
AJC decried the fact that a primary campaign in Tennessee's 9th Congressional District has been marked by efforts to incite tensions between the Memphis African American and Jewish communities. "We are compelled to speak out against certain rhetoric and tactics that cross the line of civility," said AJC. "With many months yet remaining before the primary, it is our earnest hope that those responsible for this invidious rhetoric will see fit to shift to a campaign based on the issues and on the records of the candidates."
