UN Vote on Goldstone "Depressingly Predictable"
AJC condemned the United Nations General Assembly resolution sponsored by Arab states which endorsed the Goldstone Commission report on the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The resolution was supported by 114 states with 44 abstentions and 18 opposing.
AJC praised the 18 countries which voted against the report. "While it is disappointing that the European Union countries did not vote as a bloc, we salute the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland and Slovakia for their courageous stance in rejecting this resolution." The other countries voting no included Australia, Canada, Israel, Macedonia, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Panama, Ukraine and the United States.
AJC Praises Merkel Speech to U.S. Congress
AJC warmly praised German Chancellor Angela Merkel's address to both Houses of Congress, in which she outlined her country's stance on a range of international issues from global warming to the Iranian nuclear program.
Ship Seizure Proves Iran Is Fanning Flames of War
AJC warned that today's seizure by the Israeli Navy of a ship ferrying 500 tons of weapons from Iran to Hezbollah, the Lebanese terrorist organization, is an unmistakable sign that the Tehran regime is fanning the flames of war and conflict in the Middle East.
"We applaud the Israeli Navy for taking this decisive action," said AJC Executive Director David Harris. "The deadly cargo the ship was carrying would have enabled Hezbollah to broaden its murderous assault against Israel - a country which these terrorists, just like their Iranian paymasters, seek to wipe off the map."
AJC Houston will host Iranian journalist Mohsen Sazegara on Thursday, Nov. 19 along with the World Affairs Council Houston at a luncheon at the Westin Oaks Hotel. Sazegara will discuss the internal power struggle taking place in Iran.
