A look back, looking ahead
As the new decade begins, many of the challenging issues from the past decade will continue to confront us on the domestic and global scene.  Immigration reform, diversity, Iran and the various world organizations' preoccupation to vilify and demonize Israel and Zionism will undoubtedly shape the agenda, even if it is behind the headlines. In AJC Houston regional office, our highlights for the past six months include:
·       Engaged in advocacy and media training for Latino community leaders and organizations under a grant from the Ford Foundation for AJC's Bridge America Project for comprehensive immigration reform;
·         Initiated and coordinated the second annual Emerging Leaders Seminar for Mexican - Americans in association with the Mexican Consulate;
·         Hosted European political emerging leaders in briefings on Houston's front row and leadership position in diversity;
·         Provided unprecedented local briefings and conversations with one of the founders of Iran's revolution, who now seeks to dismantle it;
·         Continue to engage in conversations with Houston's faith and ethnic leaders;
·         Created the Schechter-Zeidman Jewish Teen Advocacy Award for efforts by area teens for Israel and initiated the first Israel Advocacy elective at The Emery/Weiner School;
·         Participated as the only Jewish organization to commemorate with the Indian community the one year anniversary of the Mumbai terror attacks;
·         Brought together over 180 faith, ethnic, diplomatic and community leaders to celebrate America's Table - a Thanksgiving program;
·         Reach out to and engage America's third largest diplomatic corps to discuss global Jewish concerns and the Iranian threat, and host our annual Consular Corps Chanukah Party; and
·         Met privately with Houston mayoral candidates on energy, immigration and community concerns.

OUTREACH

AJC is actively engaged in the domestic and international scene as a GLOBAL JEWISH ADVOCACY organization.

Mexican Consul General Carlos Gonzalez Magallon, dean of the Houston consular corps, will participate in the UN Holocaust Victim Observance on Jan. 27.

As you have read weekly in the AJC Houston e blast and as David Harris notes, "AJC has utilized all the tools at our command - unparalleled access to global leaders; an ever-growing network of relations with religious, ethnic, and civic partners; a multimedia, multilingual communications campaign; and a fine-tuned blend of first-class analysis and goal-oriented advocacy.
"Support our work. Empower us. Let's seize the opportunities - and confront the challenges - together.

"We can make a difference. For over a century, AJC has proved the point. Let's ensure that our best days are ahead of us.

Please make an end-of-year, tax-deductible donation to AJC today. You'll be helping us, but, in reality, we'll be helping each other."
Best wishes for a happy and healthy new year,

Randy Czarlinsky
