Roundtable discussions begin 
 
The Challenges and Priorities of immigration reform were the focus of the first of three task force roundtable discussions this week. Dr. Stephen Klineberg provided a historical perspective of Houston's immigration trends and what the City's future in the short and long term will be.  The task force discussions, which are part of AJC's Bridging America Project that is funded by the Ford Foundation, brings together business, faith, ethnic, law enforcement,
education and community leaders.

AJC Partners with IsraAID in Haiti Earthquake Relief
AJC has raised more than $275,000 to date for specialist teams from Israel's leading relief organization, IsraAID, who are working with the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. CNN recently cited the Israeli medical teams efforts. Please give now.

AJC Hurricane Katrina Fund Builds Center at Dillard University
Dillard University dedicated its new Distance Learning Center in honor of the American Jewish Committee (AJC). The video-conference center, located in the Alexander Library, was built with funds provided by AJC after Hurricane Katrina. READ
 
UN Human Rights Council's Rogues' Gallery of Advisors
Ali Hassan Majeed, the Iraqi general known as "Chemical Ali" for ordering poison-gas attacks on Kurdish civilians, was hanged in Baghdad after a special tribunal handed him his fourth death sentence. Meanwhile, at the Human Rights Council in Geneva last Monday, Halima Warzazi, the woman who presonally shielded the Saddam regime from international censure over these gas attacks was seated as Chair of the 47-nation body's Advisory Committee. AJC is actively engaged in the domestic and international scene as a GLOBAL JEWISH ADVOCACY organization. 

 
Twenty members of Houston's Diplomatic Corps have already confirmed their participation in AJC Houston's Annual Consular Corps Luncheon on Feb. 25.  For more information on this event, please
 
AJC Houston's Norway Consular Corps team will participate in a small discussion next week with the Deputy Chiefs of Mission of the embassies of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
 
Ambassador Cynthia Perry, Honorary Consul General of Rawanda, met with AJC this week to discuss the upcoming Houston visit of the Rawandan President.
 
Dalit Horn, Assistant Director of AJC's Belfer Center for American Pluralism, met with board members to discus AJC's Bridging America Project and immigration reform.  Participants included: Stephen Kaufman, Ann Kasman, Ira Shepard, Ben Samuels, Richard Shaw, Martin Siegel, Tracy Stein and staff.  Samuels and Shaw are members of AJC's National Immigration Taskforce.
