New AJC Survey
U.S. Jews Sharply Divided Over Obama Approach on Iran
As President Obama prepares to host the leaders of more than 40 countries at a nuclear summit in Washington, a new AJC survey shows that a majority of American Jews are deeply divided over how the president is handling the threat of Iran's nuclear program. According to the just-concluded AJC 2010 Annual Survey of American Jewish Opinion, 47 percent approve the president's strategy, 42 percent disapprove, and 11 percent are unsure.
A full 68 percent of U.S. Jews believe there is either "little" or "no" chance of sanctions and diplomacy curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions. Fifty-three percent would support, and 42 percent oppose, U.S. military action to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, while 62 percent would support, and 33 percent oppose, Israeli military action.
Conducted annually since 1990, AJC's surveys often are cited as the most authoritative barometer of American Jewish opinion on a range of issues.
The full survey, which contains additional policy questions and tracks American Jewish perceptions of key countries, is available at
www.ajc.org/survey2010.

OUTREACH

AJC is actively engaged in the domestic and international scene as a GLOBAL JEWISH ADVOCACY organization.

A small group of representatives from three Houston Jewish organizations met with Presbyterian leaders at the AJC office this week to discuss the Presbyterian proposed Middle East study guide that will be voted on at their General Assembly in July in Minneapolis.  Nat Levy, Barbara Shepard, Rabbi Steve Morgen, and Randy Czarlinsky represented AJC. Mike Cole, the general Presbytery, provided a detailed analysis in how Prebyterians approach and work on documents.  The local Presbyterian-Jewish dialogue, which was created over five years ago when Presbyterians voted to divest from Israel, will meet in the coming weeks to discuss the guide.

"Iran, Islam and the Middle East" was the focus of Randy Czarlinsky's breakfast discussion with the Federation's Women's Division Business and Professional group this week.

Student representatives from the The Emery/Weiner School's Israel Advocacy elective, which AJC Houston helped create, coordinate and present, met with Congressman Al Green this week in his Houston office to discuss Iran, energy and the Middle East.

Special thanks to Michele Hedges for visiting with AJC this week.
Thank you to board members who are reaching out to new AJC board members for the coming year.
